Yakima River
We have received some rain the last few days which has put the river back on a little rise. Is the river going to stay in shape? That is hard to say, keep your eyes on the flows. Our guess is that the upper river will stay in shape and the lower Yakima will be questionable. The fishing the last few days has been just OK, not much dry fly opportunity. The most consistent fishing has been nymphing. The bug of choice has been Caddis and PMD nymphs. On a good note the weather looks like it will be improving by this weekend. We will keep you posted

Yakima River
Over the the weekend the Yakima River has started it’s big runoff. We have received some very welcomed warm weather. The great weather will continue throughout this week which is great. It will allow a lot of the snow up high to come down. Cross our fingers that this is the only big blow out of the year. As the water was starting to come up we where seeing a lot of Caddis, Salmon flies, A few PMD’s and some Yellow Sallies. As soon as the river comes back into shape I would say that the fishing will be on. When is the Yakima River going to back into shape? That is hard to say, We are hopeful by the end of the week the upper river will be fishable. Only time will tell. We will keep you posted.

The weather is finally warm, I think we can officially say no more snow. However, the snow will start to melt and put the river in poor shape. Proof, life can never be perfect. The river menu is getting more complex, the caddis are starting to show themselves, stonefly options are getting more diverse. Mayflies are always on the menu, plus a few sneaky terrestrials to throw a monkey wrench in the best laid plans. Here’s a rundown: Salmonflies, Goldenstones, yellow sallies, PMD’s, Drakes, caddis, carpenter ants, etc. Keep a eye on flows and cross your fingers.

The Yakima is in great shape and fishing good. We are seeing a decent March Brown hatch around 1:30 with a few BWO’s mixed in. We are starting the day nymphing and then posting up on a good hatch zone around 1:00 (be patient) and catching a few fish on dries then finishing the day nymphing. The forecast looks good for the Weekend.

Sorry for such a long delay in fishing reports. Fishing has been up and down the last couple of weeks. The March brown hatch is here and has been coming off around 1:30, which has been the most productive time of fishing. March browns have been the bug of choice lately, although we are still seeing some Skwala’s and BWO coming off. We are just a few weeks away from the Mothers Day Caddis hatch, cross your fingers that the river stays in shape for this great hatch. The weather is supposed to warm up this week, so get out and enjoy the sun!

Yakima Fishing Report
Randy Crimp
It was a tough week of fishing on the Yakima, but there were still some great fish caught
and good times to be had. The fishing was primarily a nymphing game with a little dry fly fishing sprinkled in. Stones and San Juan worms in various colors and sizes fished the best with some smaller bugs working before the water colored up. We landed a beautiful Yakima Steelhead on thursday. Chuck did a great job fighting the fish, took a spill mid fight and got totally soaked, then finished the fight with a steelhead to the net! The best part is his 16 year old son filmed the whole thing.
Yesterday, Liam landed this monster Rainbow while logging hours for his Senior project on fly fishing….good choice of a subject. The river had about 2-2.5 ft. of visibility and looked great. Water clarity should only get better with all of the flows on the drop.
We do a great variety of trips, ranging from beginner to expert. Give us a call to arrange a trip that is tailored to your needs for a great day on the river.

Why is my margarita glass empty again? Oh, I forgot, 13 permits chased my crab today with no eats. We are in the middle of our first week of clients fishing the flats of the Yucatan. It’s hard to beat the eighty degree weather and nothing but sunshine. We’ve had a ton of bonefish, a few tarpon, one big barracuda, three permit and a snook to the boat. Our clients, Gary, Chris and Brandon (Hill’s Discount Flies) have been having a great time and they have two more days before heading home. Johnny Boitano and I will have another group arriving for six more days of fishing the flats of the Yucatan. Can’t wait!

From the Teanaway down stream the Yakima river is dirty, above the Teanaway the river is still in great shape. It’s hard to say when the lower river is going to be back in shape. The fishing in the upper river has been good the last few days, we are seeing Skwala’s, BWO and a few March browns on the water. The BWO’s and March Browns have been starting to pop around 1:30pm. Spend some time working the the water and be patent looking for fish rising. Enjoy the the day!

The dry fly fishing has picked up and has been consistent the last few days in the farmlands and the lower canyon. The dry fly fishing in the upper Yakima is still zone specific and spotty. The nymphing overall through out the system his been real good. We are really enjoying the weather that we are receiving. The water clarity above the Teanaway cleared up yesterday and is in good condition. The fishing and weather was tough we had snow, rain and a little sun through out the day. We nymphed all day and hooked a few fish on size 18 CDC pheasant tails, size 8 tan Pat stone, and a couple on a san juan worm. We did see a small BWO hatch with a couple March browns mixed in around 1:30pm. Today the water below the Teanaway looks a lot better, and so does the weather. It’s March, everyday is a new day!

Over the weekend we had a mixed bag of fishing reports from our guides. The zone that had the best fishing was in the lower Yakima Canyon, with great dry fly fishing for most of the day. In the upper river and the farmlands you had to work a little harder for the fish with a nymph set up. We have another great forecast ahead this week. The concern this week is the weather may be to nice, night time temperatures are not going to be as cold. If this happens we will probably see the Yakima rise a little, keep an eye on the graphs. The good thing is we will continue to see more great dry fly fishing.

It’s spring! You never know what the weather is going to be each day, we went from a 60 degree high a few days ago to having a light dusting of snow this morning. The spring dry fly fishing is going to be the same, some days you will have decent fishing on dries and other days you will have to work for them. The Nymphing and streamer game will be more consistent. The exciting reward will be to catch some great fish. Be prepared for all weather conditions and have fun however you like to fish.

The last few days the lower Yakima has been fishing better than the upper Yakima river. If you are wanting to throw dries, focus your efforts in the slow moving water and be patient. Nymphing has been consistent through out the day. The water came up a little and we got nervous because we are so use to having the river go out from the last three springs. It was just a little bump and is fishable. This spring is shaping up good.

Mild and sunny weather continues to dominate on the East side of the Cascades. Daytime temperatures will be in the fifties today around Ellensburg. The good weather has brought the adult skwala stoneflies out early this year. Amazing that it is February and we have been able to catch fish on the surface with skwala dries this past week. Using stonefly nymphs with a worm or beadhead dropper tends to be productive in the morning hours while an adult skwala dry can pick up fish later in the afternoon. Black or olive colored streamers can be productive the entire day.
Water conditions are low and clear throughout the system. The water temperature is definitely warmer in the Ellensburg area versus the upper river around Cle Elum. Regardless of the river section you want to fish, you should have a good day with these conditions and fish activity.

Over the last few days the weather has continued to be great. However, the downside is that fishing has been tough. It’s hard to say why the fishing has slowed, although it still has been enjoyable fishing in this great weather. When you are experiencing a tough day, go back to the meat and potatoes and continue to have fun. The tough days are good to have because they make you realize that you can always learn more.
Most of the boat launches in the upper river are snow free now except Bullfrog and Ensign.

Ellensburg was a bit breezy today and it was a nice surprise to
find some great weather in the Lower Yakima River Canyon. We had some beautiful sunshine for most of the day and some great fishing. Nymphing a standard size 8 tan/brown stone with a pheasant tail below it consistently produced through out the day with things slowing down around 3pm. Hook ups were about 50/50 for the top and bottom bug. We landed some nice rainbows, fat white fish, and lost a few more. We also had the great surprise of fighting and landing a beautiful Yakima Steelhead, something to to always be stoked about!
We didn’t see many Skwalas adults but that game shouldn’t be to far out with this nice weather. Call the shops or come see us at the Lynnwood Fly Fishing Show Febuary 16-17 for more information about getting out on the water.

This past week Ted and Johnny took some time off from chasing trout and spent some time chasing waterfowl! Helping our friend Ryan Fortier film his TV show Duck Dog Waterfowl. It has been a ton of fun filming and taking photos. We got to see some great waterfowl hunting in Central Washington state.
The Yakima continues to produce some nice winter time fishing. The weather has warmed up a bit the last few days, which has made the days more enjoyable. The same type of flies have been working : WD 40′s, Non beaded Pheasant Tails, Red and Copper Brassies in sizes 16 through 22 and don’t forget about Pat Stones. This is a great time of year to get out for a few hours and have the river all to yourself.
The snow pack at Snoqualmie Pass is at 123% normal. Looks like we will have plenty of water for 2013. Lets hope that it stays around that number and warms up gradually. We love the spring time fishing, it’s just around the corner. Keep your fingers crossed for a normal spring this year!
