Summer Travel with the Yakima river fly shop |
|
We understand if you don’t want to fish the river in January or February. However, that shouldn’t prevent you from getting excited about the upcoming 2007 fly fishing season. A good way to start the season is checking out one of the fly fishing only shows. This year Portland will host its first ever show on February 17 and 18 at the Oregon Convention Center. Bellevue is in its fifth year at the Meydenbauer Center on February 9, 10, and 11. For more information give the shop a call or email, or go to www.flyfishingshow.com for a list of all the vendors, classes and Destination Theater presentations. It’s not official yet, but Jim may be presenting on the Yakima, the desert spring creek, the Clark Fork and Alaska at the Destination Theater. |

Yakima river clean-up - Fall 2006 |
|
The first ever Yakima River Clean-Up organized by the fly shop took place October 28. Volunteer turnout was a little low with four drift boats, 13 people and one dog. However, we were able to collect over four pick-up loads of garbage off the upper river. There’s a lot more garbage out there yet to be collected. With all the log jams and tricky water for people in inner-tubes and small rafts, the upper river clean up is more of a disaster recovery of large items than just bottles and cans.
After the clean-up, we had a nice BBQ, a few libations, and a slide show presentation. A big thank you goes out to the Kittitas County Solid Waste Program for donating garbage bags and the transfer station fee; Whispering Pines RV Park for the use of their BBQ facility; and the Kittitas Field and Stream Club for donating the food for the BBQ. A huge thanks to the volunteers: Ken Pappas, Loren and Jane Mooney, Sheila Gallagher, Guy Drew, Chris and Katie Rainey, Steve Shehorn, Lucas and Mia, and Rich Pogue.
The fly shop is hoping to organize another clean-up in the spring and again next fall. If you are interested in volunteering for this great event, please let the fly shop know so we can do a good job at organization. |

Winter Rates - Guided fly fishing trips |

“Northwest Casting Call”- fly fishing as medicine |

|
Fishing the Yakima can be very good in the winter. The lower river can be very good dry fly fishing with midges and baetis, while dry flies can also take fish on the upper river, a big black leech fished slow can move some pretty big boys.
To encourage people to fish and because it’s usually dark about 4:30 PM, we’ve adjusted our full day guide rates to $230. We typically have lots of openings in the winter and would love to fish most any day. Please call or email if you are interested in a fly fishing trip. Trips include the all flies and supplies such as leader and tippet. |

The Yakima River Fly Shop had the good fortune of working with Northwest Hospital once again in October through the Northwest Casting Call program. The program introduces women who are cancer survivors to fly fishing through two half day fly fishing classes and a guided fly fishing trip on the Yakima River. Not only has fly fishing been thought to reduce the anxieties of day to day life, but casting is great physical therapy for reducing the risk of blood clot and infection after cancer therapy. Through the program, we were able to introduce 12 people to the sport of fly fishing and experience the beautiful scenery only accomplished by floating the Yakima River on a warm fall day.
Thank you to Lavonne Williams at NW Hospital for all her hard work in putting the program together. We are planning our spring program for the second week in April. |
